NEW WORK - SCULPTURE 1

Also 'BEST IN SHOW' and new in 2010 - BENT PENNY BOTTLE and 'RESONANCE'

Sculpture I (one) references the history of sculpture whilst asking contemporary questions such as ‘Is sculpture so exhausted that it needs to move to pull focus?’

The sculpture takes the form of a huge scaled up 'I' Beam 12 meters long and 6.5 m tall 3.8 meters wide, referencing Sir Anthony Caro's 'Sculpture 7' and Richard Serra's work, amongst other influences. The Sculpture will reflect on where we are, what we have achieved, what we have built and looks to the future.

The contemporary twist is that  from looking like an incredibly heavy 30 tonne piece that is stationary, the sculpture moves ever so slightly and unexpectedly every 10/15 minutes.

NEW 2010 - Bent Penny Bottle
Bent Penny Bottle is made entirely of 3,152 one-penny pieces, individually bent by hand and welded together, the work is an ironic view on the monetary value of art. Inspired by the rise in art works sold within the last few years for “astronomical prices” and the way investors collect art as a source of financial security, Bent Penny Bottle began as a reflection on one of the few areas unaffected by recession and the global economy. “I liked the idea of taking a currency, deeming it worthless and then making it into art which has the potential value of a million times more than it’s original sum of £31.52” says Richard. “This idea of playing with monetary scale and the saying “It’s about as useful as a bent penny” was an interesting concept, especially during the last few years since the recession.” The coins were collected by family and friends and found beneath the back of sofas, lurking in drawers at home and some even on the street. “The funny thing about this is that the coins are worthless now that they are bent, but have gained value in the form of a work of art.
